Welcome to the blogosphere! I came over from JL's blog. ;-)

Good thought-provoking post. I'm glad the solution you came up with was reasonable and not too heavyweight for either employer or blogging employess.

Tommy

Thanks John. Yeah, we think we've managed to come up with a solution that will work. It wasn't too difficult to reach a satisfactory conclusion; after a few weeks of discussion, I had JL in an armlock, but he had managed to grab my throat and was trying a choke submission. And there was blood and teeth and stuff on the floor, and our Office Manager was getting grumpy about that. So we called it a draw, shook hands, apologized to the OM, and promised her we'd never argue about blogs ever again.

Your summary is similar to the blog policy we have at my company as well. "Personal" blogs do have some corporate interest and the guidelines are established to help protect both the company and the individual. When you write the post doesn't really have anything to do with the policy (which is ultimately good since you want to be able to post when the spirit moves you).

Tommy

@Meg,
Yeah, I think what a lot of non-bloggers don't understand is the motivation behind blogging. As a result, it's easy to make what appear to be simple and reasonable rules - like "Only blog on your own time" - that inadvertently make it very hard to write when the feeling takes you.

My general advice is that my team see business-related blogging as merely *one* method among many to achieve the overall aim (which is primarily a form of marketing). And so in the same way that they shouldn't spend every daylight hour writing conference papers (another valid method), so too should their blogging, however business-legitimate, be balanced in terms of time spent.
